Business & Economy
Africa is known to be a mineral and metal rich land. This is both a blessing and a curse according to Depose Muchena (shown in the video to the right), which explains that these natural resources bring both riches and disaster. A country which possesses these resources are often exploited by visitors. In the case of Zimbabwe, for example, most of the revenues have disappeared into the hands of army officers. This has left the country with fiscal problems and also an exploited terrain. Much of the ground has been dug up while prospecting and searching for such as gold, platinum, and diamonds. |

Namibia
Natural Resources
Since Naminia exports Uranium (a material needed for nuclear reactors), the country is important to other countries because it does have so much uranium. This, combined with the natural resources that Namibia produces, leads to exploitation of natural resources and people of the country. Farmers only grow enough to live so that they can work in the mines, often getting exploited. (Namibia) Zimbabwe
Natural Resources
Zimbabwe has the potential to improve the fiscal situation of the country, but almost all revenues from the field have disappeared into the pockets of army officers and ZANU-PF politicians. This corruption has helped lead to an even worse political situation and exploitation in the country. (HISTORY OF ZIMBABWE) Zambia
Natural Resources
Solar power and Hydroelectricity are potential major sources of income for Zambia but more infrastructure must be made for it to be feasible. Since agriculture provides more jobs than the mining industry, most of the land is farming rather than investing in prospecting for any type of minerals. (Zambia Economy) Lesotho
Natural Resources
Since Lesotho exports manufacturing goods, the country depends heavily on inflows of workers from other countries. This can lead to exploitation of the workers in the factories. Lesotho also relies on subsistence farming so not very much of the land is taken up for farming. (Lesotho Natural resources-Geography) |
Botswana
Natural Resources
Since Botswana is known for its diamonds, Botswana faces the struggle of blood diamonds which leads to exploitation and death. Countries like Botswana often face corruption. (Republic of Botswana-Government portal) Republic of South Africa
Natural Resources
Since the Republic of South Africa has been facing a brain drain and no longer has large amounts of exports combined with negligible water, the country must work hard to educate its people before improving its situation. (Welcome to the official South African government online site) Swaziland
Natural Resources
The country relies mainly on taking advantage of its forests, which can lead to deforestation (another type of exploitation) and eventually there will no longer be forests. (Swaziland Economy) Madagascar
Natural Resources
Madagascar relies on its natural resources, while the majority of the countries GDP come from the textile industry and fish. This diversity allows Madagascar to prosper a little in the area and help guard against major downfalls. (Economy of Madagascar) |
